I was listening to Ben’s CD on my way home from work and the song Ex-Sensitive started to play. I was listening to the words and trying to figure out what Ben was thinking of and referring to in this song. This is what happens when you are a social worker for so many years you are always trying to figure out what people are thinking. I am also a curious person by nature and let’s say the curiosity got the better of me with this one. I think that this song might be about a person in some part of the entertainment business. These lyrics are one of my favorite parts of the song:

Ex-sensitive soul, don't you think its time you break from the mould?
Its not what it seems, life is bigger when its up on a screen
Its not your fault they made you beg
To be a billboard on two legs, oh no

This part makes me think of a person in the entertainment business
And now that they are in the business there is a side that they don’t like
But realize that they need to have attention drawn to themselves in order to be successful
They want to be taken seriously. They are wondering how they can keep their ideals and principles while also being successful. They don’t really like the attention all the time but realize once it starts it is hard to stop.

Then there are these lyrics:
Yes, you're sensitive, quite expensive your life's become
Yes, you're beautiful, indisputable, in place of fun
Yes, you're glorious, quite luxurious, rather numb
Lonely gadgets(things that maybe not everyone else has or can afford – but because this person is in the entertainment business these things are easier for them to get but are not making them happy or isolating them from things they want to do or find important.) and brands (referring to tatoos) and badges (awards/symbols that show their popularity), I guess you've won.

The last part that I was thinking about was this:
We'll come to town
We'll add a message to our name
And we know you're not the same
Here the person wants to show people that they are not focused on themselves – that they are aware of the things going on in the world and want to show people that they have issues that they care about. Hmmm Who does that sound like?

Okay I am done overanalyzing this song but this idea has been in my mind for a few days and I thought why not write it down and share it. I debated for days about whether to post this. I am sure everyone will have a different take on this song and what it means. Who knows if this is what Ben was referring to but this is what it said to me. So anyone else have any ideas on this – hoping I am not the only person here that tries to figure out what the meaning of some of the songs on Ex-Sensitive. So if anyone wants to be strange/weird with me come on jump in and let me know what you think.

Brandy - now you have me curious as to what you think the song means? Are you willing to share your ideas? Anyone else? The song has different meanings for everyone because we all have had different experiences in life. I love it how music brings people together and helps us relate to each other.

Although I'm anaytical by nature, when it comes to music, I'm usually first drawn to the melody and instrumentation and to the feelings the song evokes that I rarely analyze the song, until much later. Unless the song is sending a message, I can sing the lyrics and not even care what they mean. ha ha
